Mexican Forces Rescue 3 Kidnapping Victims in Puerto Peñasco

Three people held captive in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico, are safe today after a dramatic rescue by state and federal forces working together to end their nightmare.

The operation unfolded Friday afternoon in the Sonora beach town when authorities responded to reports from miners who had escaped a kidnapping attempt days earlier. Their descriptions helped investigators locate a white Chevrolet Suburban linked to the crime and track it to a specific property.

As police and military personnel approached the building, armed suspects opened fire. Security forces returned fire and eventually contained the situation, rescuing all three victims. Three police agents suffered minor injuries during the exchange but are in stable condition.

Authorities arrested seven suspects who now face serious charges including kidnapping, attempted homicide, and crimes against public servants. One of those detained is a minor.

The Ripple Effect

The rescue highlights what's possible when victims help law enforcement and different agencies coordinate their efforts. The Sonora Attorney General's Office worked with three federal agencies and the military, combining local intelligence with federal resources to act quickly.

Follow-up searches of the property and two additional downtown locations turned up significant evidence. Authorities seized more than 40 firearms, approximately 4,000 rounds of ammunition, heavy weapons, and three high-end vehicles stolen from the United States. They also recovered heroin, methamphetamine, tactical gear, and bulletproof vests.

Security Minister Omar García Harfuch publicly recognized the wounded agents for their bravery during the operation. All three are recovering and expected to make full recoveries.
