Mexican Town Creates 1,611 Kilo Cheese Ball World Record

A small Mexican town just proved that sometimes the best way to bounce back is to go bigger than ever before.

Cheesemakers in Pijijiapan, Chiapas successfully created the world's largest ball of quesillo cheese on August 29, weighing an incredible 1,611 kilograms. The achievement earned them back their Guinness World Record crown after losing it to competitors in 2024.

Eight local cheese companies joined forces for the massive undertaking. They spent nearly four hours winding strings of fresh cheese around a special rotating metal structure, carefully building up the giant ball layer by layer.

The project required about 15,500 liters of fresh milk and three practice runs before the big day. Mayor Carlos Alberto Albores accepted the official Guinness certificate from adjudicator Alfredo Arista at the town's Campo Nuevo Milenio field.

Pijijiapan originally set the record in 2023 with a 558-kilo cheese ball. When cheesemakers in Reyes Etla, Oaxaca topped that with a 636-kilo ball in 2024, the town of 18,000 refused to stay defeated.

This time, they didn't just beat the competition. They absolutely crushed it with a cheese ball nearly three times heavier than the previous record.

The Ripple Effect

The record attempt showcased more than competitive spirit. Tourism Minister Josefina Rodríguez highlighted how the event shines a spotlight on Pijijiapan's rich dairy traditions and the families who have perfected cheesemaking over generations.

The town is known throughout Mexico for exceptional dairy products, especially its famous doble crema cheese. Local officials are now seeking official geographical protection for "Quesillo de Pijijiapan, Chiapas" to preserve the region's unique cheesemaking heritage.

The state Economy Ministry has filed an application with the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property to formalize this designation. If approved, it would protect the identity and traditional methods that make Pijijiapan cheese special.

Officials hope the record will draw visitors to experience the Pacific Coast town's flavors and culture firsthand. Behind that massive cheese ball lies generations of knowledge, pride, and community collaboration.
