Mexico Dominates Caribbean Games with Eye on 2028 Olympics

Mexico just hit 106 medals at the Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo, and they're not slowing down with 11 days still to compete.

The powerhouse nation leads Colombia by more than 40 medals at the historic 100th anniversary of the world's oldest regional Olympic competition. More than 6,000 athletes from 37 countries gathered in the Dominican Republic for this milestone event, which runs through August 8.

Mexico's delegation of over 600 athletes came ready to dominate. Taekwondo stars like Daniela Souza and Iker Casas helped rack up 14 podium finishes in their sport alone, while shooters Gabriela Rodríguez and Luis Gallardo swept gold in their events.

The open water swimming team made waves too, with Paulo Strehlke winning the 10-kilometer race and the squad collecting four medals total over one weekend. Rowers Melissa Márquez and Aylin Ibarra each powered their way to three gold medals.

President Claudia Sheinbaum led a special ceremony for the Mexican delegation last week. The nation has appeared in all 25 editions of these Games since they started in Mexico City in 1926, winning 13 championships overall.

The Ripple Effect

Mexico's strategy goes beyond regional bragging rights. The country intentionally sent its A-teams in Olympic core sports like diving, cycling, taekwondo, and open water swimming to build momentum for the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Games.

These athletes are treating Santo Domingo as their dress rehearsal for the world stage. Every race, every routine, every match is sharpening skills that could bring Olympic medals home in two years.

The next big test comes in 2027 when Mexico heads to the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru. That competition will offer an even tougher challenge and another chance to prove they're ready for Olympic glory.
