Northern Mexico is finally getting the earthquake monitoring it needs after decades of being overlooked.

The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) announced this week it's building 58 new seismic monitoring stations across the country, with most targeting the historically under-instrumented north. The expansion will cover Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, and Nuevo León.

"There is a misconception that earthquakes don't occur in those regions," said Leonardo Ramírez Guzmán, head of UNAM's seismic research unit. "However, seismic activity is also recorded there, so having more stations will allow for more precise identification and study of these events."

The new stations won't predict earthquakes, but they'll do something equally important: collect real-time data that emergency crews can use to assess damage and deploy help where it's needed most. Within about 40 minutes of a tremor, the system generates shake-intensity maps that show which buildings were affected and which areas got hit hardest.

UNAM already proved the technology works. After a magnitude 6.5 earthquake shook Guerrero on January 2, the system's intensity readings matched actual damage reports on the ground.

The Ripple Effect

The northern expansion helps balance Mexico's earthquake monitoring network, which has long favored the south and capital. Guerrero currently has 34 stations, Oaxaca has 30, and Mexico City operates roughly 100 stations, making it one of the world's densest networks alongside Tokyo and Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, vast stretches of northern Mexico have gone largely unmonitored despite sitting on active fault lines. The new stations will help scientists study tremors in these overlooked areas and give border communities the same early warning capabilities that southern states have enjoyed for years.

The project is funded by Mexico's Ministry of Security and Citizen Protection with support from the National Center for Disaster Prevention. It builds on Mexico's existing infrastructure, which includes Sasmex, the world's oldest public earthquake early warning service dating to 1991, and a joint Mexico-Japan deep-sea sensor deployment off Oaxaca.

Mexico has recorded 15 earthquakes of magnitude 7.0 or larger over the past 25 years, with most concentrated along Pacific coast states. Over 235 years of historical data shows the country averages about seven earthquakes of magnitude 6.5 or greater every five years.

Now northern communities will have the same tools to prepare, respond, and recover when the ground shakes.
