Mexico Grants Record 972 Patents in 2025, Leads LatAm in AI

Mexico's inventors are on fire, and the numbers prove it.

The Mexican Institute of Intellectual Property granted 972 patents to Mexican citizens in 2025, the highest figure in three decades. That's a stunning 38% jump from the roughly 700 patents granted in 2024, marking two consecutive years of record-breaking innovation.

The surge isn't happening by accident. Mexico's federal government launched Plan México, a national program designed to turn homegrown patents into engines of economic growth and technology transfer. The strategy is working better than anyone expected.

Mexico now stands out as Latin America's artificial intelligence powerhouse. According to the Latin American Artificial Intelligence Index, Mexico leads all countries in the region for AI patent filings. Together with Brazil, these two nations account for 95% of all AI patents filed across Latin America.

The global community is taking notice. The World Intellectual Property Organization ranks Mexico 11th worldwide for total patents granted and 11th for trademark registrations. The country also holds 7th place globally for registered trademarks currently in force.

Beyond tech innovation, Mexico protected its cultural heritage in creative ways last year. The intellectual property office published 14 declarations protecting geographical indications, which help promote and export uniquely Mexican products. These included Maya chewing gum from Quintana Roo and Campeche, handcrafted Christmas ornaments from Chignahuapan, and wines from the Querétaro wine region.

The momentum extends into international events too. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup coming to Mexico, Canada, and the United States, the patent office granted 344 trademark registrations for brands linked to the tournament.
