Mexico Unveils $8,590 EV That Pays for Itself in Savings

Mexico just drove into the affordable EV revolution with a vehicle that could change how millions of people get to work.

President Claudia Sheinbaum personally test drove the Olinia 1 prototype at a hangar north of Mexico City on Sunday, showcasing Mexico's first proprietary electric vehicle. With a starting price of 150,000 pesos (about $8,590), it costs a fraction of what most EVs command in North America.

The name comes from the Nahuatl word for "mobility," and that's exactly what engineers had in mind. The Olinia 1 was built specifically for taxi drivers, delivery workers, and anyone who spends 8 to 12 hours a day on the road covering short distances around the city.

Here's where the math gets exciting. The vehicle costs just 49 cents per kilometer to operate and could save drivers up to $28,690 annually compared to gas powered vehicles. Project researcher Imelda Vega put it simply: "This vehicle will eventually be paid for with the savings it generates."

The Olinia seats six passengers comfortably and includes accessibility features for wheelchair users. Engineers designed it to handle Mexico's challenging rainy season with IP 67 water resistance protecting the engine and battery from puddles, downpours, and floods.

The Ripple Effect

Mexico isn't just launching a car. The government plans to install 2,000 charging stations across Mexico City, México state, and Puebla by the end of 2027, with tens of thousands more stations planned nationwide. The charging system uses the North American Charging Standard, the same as Tesla, making it compatible with existing infrastructure.

Project Manager Roberto Capuano emphasized the bigger vision: "We wanted to find a solution that works for the people." For workers who currently face the choice between expensive conventional cars or risky motor taxis, the Olinia offers a safer, cheaper third option.

Production begins in 2027, and the team is already working on their next model. A freight transport version will debut in July, expanding the electric vehicle lineup to serve even more working Mexicans.

This isn't just about one affordable car hitting the streets; it's about an entire country building the infrastructure and industry to make clean transportation accessible to everyone.
