Ohio State AI Teams Win $293M Energy Innovation Grant

Scientists at Ohio State University just won a major role in transforming how America makes scientific breakthroughs, and the implications reach far beyond one campus.

The U.S. Department of Energy selected two teams led by Ohio State researchers to join the Genesis Mission, a $293 million initiative designed to supercharge scientific discovery using artificial intelligence. The goal is ambitious: double the nation's scientific productivity by combining AI with world-class research facilities and brilliant minds.

Physics professor Roland Kawakami leads one team developing AI for next-generation electronics manufacturing. Computer science professor Han-Wei Shen heads another team creating advanced AI models to solve complex flow problems. Both teams include researchers from national laboratories and tech giants like Intel and NVIDIA.

The Genesis Mission tackles over 26 national challenges spanning clean energy, biotechnology, critical materials, nuclear energy, and quantum computing. Each selected team receives up to $750,000 in phase one to test their AI concepts over nine months. If successful, they could secure $6 to $15 million for three more years of work.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright called the response to the mission remarkable. "America has no shortage of bold ideas or talented scientists," he said, noting the exceptional quality of proposals received.

The Ripple Effect

Ohio State's selection reflects years of investment in AI leadership that's paying dividends for students and society. The university launched AI Fluency, a groundbreaking program making every student "bilingual" in their major field and AI applications. That means tomorrow's engineers, doctors, teachers, and artists will graduate ready to harness AI for good.

The school also created Buckeye BioLaunch, which uses AI to accelerate drug discovery and aims to support up to 20 screening projects annually. These aren't just academic exercises. They're building pipelines toward actual treatments that could help patients.

The AI(X) Hub brings researchers together across disciplines, ensuring breakthroughs in one field spark ideas in others. When healthcare experts collaborate with computer scientists and engineers, innovation accelerates.

John Horack, Ohio State's vice president for research, said these awards demonstrate the vital role university researchers play in accelerating discovery that benefits Ohio, the nation, and the world.
