Mexico's EV Startup Olinia Unveils Prototypes in June

Mexico is about to get its own homegrown electric vehicle, and it could change how millions of people get around their cities.

Olinia, a government-supported EV startup, will reveal its first two mini electric car prototypes this June. The company's engineering team is putting the finishing touches on the vehicles, with design work wrapping up by the end of March.

The timing couldn't be better for Mexico. As car prices skyrocket globally and environmental concerns grow, Olinia offers a fresh solution built specifically for Mexican cities and drivers.

Roberto Capuano, Olinia's coordinator, told Bloomberg that early manufacturing and testing will begin immediately after the engineering phase completes. The company is already in talks with private investors and expects the concrete prototypes to speed up those conversations significantly.

Olinia needs $200 million in private capital to jumpstart full-scale manufacturing. Having actual vehicles to show potential investors, complete with technical specifications, makes that fundraising goal much more achievable.

The project has strong backing from Mexico's government, with President Claudia Sheinbaum personally involved in briefings about the company's progress. This support signals that electric transportation is becoming a national priority.

The Ripple Effect

If Olinia succeeds, the impact extends far beyond just adding another car brand to the market. Mexico would join a small group of countries manufacturing their own electric vehicles, reducing dependence on imports and creating thousands of local jobs.

The focus on mini EVs is particularly smart for Mexican cities, where narrow streets and parking challenges make smaller vehicles more practical. These compact cars could be perfect for the daily commutes of millions of urban Mexicans.
