MGM Reaches $500K Milestone Helping Macau Families

For 14 years, casino operator MGM has quietly been filling refrigerators and pantries across Macau, and their latest donation just pushed their community support past a remarkable milestone.

MGM contributed $37,000 (MOP 300,000) to the Holy House of Mercy's Welfare Shop on April 8, bringing their total donations since 2013 to $512,000 (MOP 4.1 million). The money funds food hampers packed with rice, noodles, canned goods, cooking oil, and household essentials for families who need them most.

Kenneth Feng, MGM China's CEO, personally delivered the donation check to António José de Freitas, President of the Holy House of Mercy. Nearly 400 local households will benefit from this year's contribution alone.

The Welfare Shop has been a lifeline for struggling families since opening in 2013. It provides regular food supplies and daily necessities to households referred by local community organizations including the Macau Federation of Trade Unions and the General Union of Neighborhood Associations.

This year's donation came with an extra dose of heart. MGM's management team and Golden Lion Volunteer Team packed the hampers themselves, joined by their own children. The families received reusable handcarts along with their food supplies, making it easier to transport groceries and adding a practical tool they can use again and again.

The volunteers delivered hampers directly to families referred by four partner organizations, including the Macau Association of Parents of the Mentally Handicapped. Parents brought their kids along for deliveries, turning charity into a teaching moment about caring for neighbors.

The Ripple Effect

When a major employer commits to feeding families year after year, it creates stability that reaches beyond full pantries. Parents can redirect scarce funds toward medicine, school supplies, or emergency savings. Kids see corporate leaders showing up personally to serve their community. Young volunteers learn generosity by watching their parents pack boxes and knock on doors.

MGM's 14-year commitment shows that consistent, unglamorous support creates deeper change than one-time headline donations. The reusable handcarts are a perfect symbol: a practical gift that keeps serving families long after the initial food runs out.
