Miami Hero Saves Woman From Random Attack on Biscayne Blvd
Cassius Bythewood sprinted into action when he saw a stranger being brutally attacked, risking his own safety to save her life. Weeks later, the woman he rescued got to thank him in person.
When Cassius Bythewood heard screaming outside on May 19, he didn't hesitate for a second. He saw a man on top of Caitlin Dydzuhn with a weapon and broke into a full sprint to help.
Dydzuhn had been walking her dog outside her downtown Miami apartment building on Biscayne Boulevard when a homeless man attacked her without warning. Bythewood threw kicks and punches, fracturing his pinky finger in the process.
He finally stopped the assault by swinging a glass water bottle at the attacker, shattering it on impact. Even then, Bythewood had to kick the man again to free Dydzuhn's dog leash from under his leg.
"Just letting her know that she was safe," Bythewood said. He pulled Dydzuhn and her uninjured dog to safety before police arrived.
The attacker, 49-year-old Raydean Johnson, was arrested after an hours-long standoff. Dydzuhn suffered severe injuries across her face and is now partially blind in one eye, but she survived.

Weeks later, the two reunited in an emotional meeting. "You saved my life, and it's something I think about every day," Dydzuhn told Bythewood.
Why This Inspires
Bythewood's heroism wasn't random chance. Just months earlier, he had cofounded 10K Steps Miami, a nonprofit walking club dedicated to keeping women safe in South Florida.
His martial arts training helped him act quickly, but it was his character that made him run toward danger. "I'm very tapped in with my faith, and I do believe that God places us in the places that we're supposed to be," Bythewood said.
He also sprained his knee during the rescue, adding to his fractured finger. None of that mattered when someone needed help.
In a world where people often say they'd help in an emergency, Bythewood proved he never hesitated when it counted most.
