Miami Volunteers Pack 1,000 Backpacks for Students

Nearly 1,000 Miami-Dade County students will walk into their classrooms next week with everything they need to succeed, thanks to volunteers who spent their Saturday filling backpacks with hope.

Between 75 and 100 volunteers gathered at United Way Miami's annual back-to-school drive, packing each bag with notebooks, pencils, folders, crayons, and other essential classroom supplies. The effort tackles a growing challenge for families across South Florida, where back-to-school supplies now cost up to $150 per child.

"We want to make sure that parents aren't having to make a decision between, 'Do we buy a third meal or do I buy school supplies for the kids?'" said Ivette Diaz, vice president at United Way Miami. For many households, that impossible choice becomes real as school costs continue climbing year after year.

The volunteers came from United Way Miami partner and sponsor organizations, turning supply assembly into a community celebration. Each backpack represents more than just materials. It's a message to students that their community believes in them and wants them to start the year confident and prepared.

The Ripple Effect

When students walk into class with the right supplies, teachers can focus on teaching instead of scrambling to share limited resources. Parents can breathe easier knowing their kids won't feel left behind on day one. That confidence boost on the first day of school sets the tone for the entire year ahead.

United Way Miami's backpack drive is just one of several back-to-school initiatives the organization is running this month. They continue partnering with local businesses, donors, and volunteers to support families throughout Miami-Dade County, building a network of support that extends far beyond a single Saturday morning.

The backpacks will be distributed next week across the county, arriving just in time for students to start their school year on the right foot.
