Michelle Obama Saves Choking Friend at Dinner

When a friend started choking at dinner, Michelle Obama didn't hesitate to jump in and save her life.

The former first lady shared the story during a recent episode of her podcast "IMO," which she co-hosts with her brother Craig Robinson. Comedian Kevin Hart joined them for a conversation about health scares when Obama casually mentioned she'd performed the Heimlich maneuver on a friend.

Obama was dining with the friend, her daughter Malia, and two of Malia's friends when the emergency happened. The woman, who had previously told Obama about an esophageal condition that sometimes caused swallowing problems, suddenly stood up and started coughing.

"She was straining, and I said, 'Are you OK?'" Obama recalled. The woman shook her head no.

Obama positioned herself behind her friend and performed the Heimlich maneuver for the first time in her life. "It dislodged it. It just popped up right away," she said.

Once the crisis passed, Obama turned her attention to the three younger people at the table. They had "pushed away from the table" and watched the scene unfold without helping.

"I looked at the kids and I was like, 'What were you all doing?'" Obama asked them. The young adults admitted they'd been "useless" and recognized it as a teaching moment about stepping up in emergencies.
