Michigan Brings 200,000 Wild Turkeys Back From Near Extinction

In 1954, conservationists released 50 wild turkeys into Michigan's Allegan forest, hoping they'd survive. Today, over 200,000 of their descendants roam the state's woodlands.

The Eastern wild turkey nearly disappeared from Michigan in the early 1900s. Unregulated hunting and habitat loss pushed them to the brink of extinction across the region.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources took a chance on those 50 Pennsylvania birds seven decades ago. The gamble paid off spectacularly as the transplants adapted and thrived in their new home.

The turkey comeback represents just one chapter in Michigan's wildlife revival story. Bald eagles, once reduced to just 52 breeding pairs in 1961, now number over 1,000 pairs statewide after DDT was banned.

Ospreys faced similar struggles from pesticide contamination in the 1950s and 60s. After DDT's abolition, these fish-hunting raptors recovered so well they were removed from threatened status in 2009.

White-tailed deer tell an equally impressive tale. From a struggling population of 45,000 in 1900, Michigan now supports between 1.75 and 2 million deer across the state.

The Ripple Effect

These rebounds show what's possible when conservation efforts get proper support and time. The return of predators like wolves and bears signals that Michigan's ecosystems are healing and rebalancing naturally.
