Michigan Invests $1.6B in Homegrown Battery Manufacturing

Michigan just landed one of the biggest clean energy wins in its history, and it's being built right in the state's own backyard.

DTE Energy announced a $1.6 billion investment to install massive battery storage systems across Michigan, all manufactured at LG Energy Solution's plant in Holland. The deal will create more than 2,000 jobs and generate $2.3 billion in total economic impact for communities across the state.

The eight battery projects will deliver enough storage to power hundreds of thousands of homes when electricity demand peaks. These systems work like giant rechargeable batteries, storing extra power when the grid has plenty and releasing it during high-demand periods when everyone cranks up their air conditioning or charges electric vehicles.

For Michigan residents, this means fewer power interruptions and lower strain on the aging electric grid. The battery systems reduce the need to constantly fire up and shut down power plants as demand changes throughout the day, making the whole system more efficient and reliable.

DTE invested nearly $4 billion in grid improvements in 2025 alone, leading to the best electric reliability the state has seen in nearly two decades. This new battery investment builds on that progress.

The Holland manufacturing plant will directly support 1,800 jobs, with another 350 positions created across construction and operations. These aren't temporary gigs but good-paying careers in advanced manufacturing and clean energy technology.

The timing couldn't be better. Michigan needs reliable, clean energy to power the data centers moving into the state, which require massive amounts of electricity to run AI systems and cloud computing. The battery storage systems funded by companies like Oracle will help DTE meet the state's 2030 clean energy goals while keeping the lights on for existing customers.
