Michigan Team Wins State Title With Walk-Off Heroics

A group of young baseball players from Michigan's Upper Peninsula just proved that championship experience runs deep.

The Negaunee Junior All-Stars captured the Michigan Junior League State Championship on Monday with back-to-back victories that showcased both grit and skill. The Miners defeated Emmett Little League 4-3 in a walk-off thriller before topping Southern Little League of Grand Rapids 6-2 in the title game.

Nine players on this year's roster already knew what holding a state championship trophy felt like. They won it all just one year ago with Negaunee's Major All-Stars team.

The semifinal against Emmett tested every ounce of that championship resolve. Negaunee fell behind 2-0 in the first inning, but Kelan Johnson cut the deficit with a clutch first-pitch swing.

The game stayed tight until the seventh inning when Johnson drew a walk and stole second base. He advanced on a wild pitch and scored the winning run on the same play, sending Negaunee to the championship game with a 4-3 victory.

The title game presented a different kind of challenge. Southern Little League entered the championship having scored 70 runs during the state tournament, but Nathan Harvala had other plans.

Taking the mound to start the game, Harvala held Southern to just two hits over four scoreless innings. His pitching gave Negaunee the breathing room they needed to build a 3-0 lead.

The sixth inning nearly derailed everything. After a lightning delay, Southern loaded the bases with no outs, threatening a comeback.

Max Cody had the answer. He caught a fly ball and fired to Harvala at third base, who then threw home to complete a double play that kept Southern off the scoreboard.

Negaunee added insurance runs on back-to-back doubles by Eli Daavettila and Louie Dix, extending the lead to 6-0. Southern scored twice in the seventh, but Johnson caught a line drive to seal the championship.

The Miners now advance to the Central Region Tournament in Midland, scheduled for July 28 through August 2, carrying the pride of Upper Michigan with them.
