Michigan Volunteers Celebrate Veterans on Forgotten Birthdays

When Pat Patterson volunteers at the Michigan Veterans Home in Chesterfield, she sees too many residents who feel forgotten on what should be special days.

Working with Fraser's VFW Post 6691 and the Michigan VFW Auxiliary, Patterson and fellow volunteers Nancy Gaglio and Nancy Stephens created a simple but powerful program. They deliver birthday T-shirts and handwritten cards to veterans living at the facility, many of whom have no family members to celebrate with them.

On one visit, Patterson encountered a resident who seemed withdrawn when she invited him to join an activity. "He was down in the dumps," she recalled. That moment reinforced why their birthday program matters so much.

The volunteers don't just drop off gifts and leave. They spend time with the veterans, creating moments of connection that transform lonely days into celebrations worth remembering.
