Middle East Adds Record 16 GW of Clean Energy in 2025

The Middle East and North Africa region just achieved something remarkable: a record-breaking 16 gigawatts of solar and wind capacity installed in 2025 alone. That's enough clean energy to power millions of homes and marks a turning point for a region historically defined by fossil fuels.

The numbers tell an even more exciting story for 2026. According to BloombergNEF's latest report, the region is set to increase renewable installations by 37%, with solar capacity additions expected to reach 18 gigawatts this year.

The momentum extends beyond solar panels. Battery storage is doubling in 2026, with 4 gigawatts of storage capacity coming online to help save excess clean energy for when it's needed most.

Five different markets across the region will each install more than 1 gigawatt of solar capacity in 2026. This geographic spread shows the clean energy transition isn't limited to one or two countries but becoming a regional movement.

Investment dollars are flooding in too. Renewable energy investments hit $22 billion in 2025, the third consecutive annual record, with 85% coming from regional investors who believe in the region's clean energy future.

The Ripple Effect

This shift carries benefits far beyond environmental wins. For oil-producing nations like Saudi Arabia, more renewable energy at home means more fuel available to export, protecting their economies while cutting emissions.

For countries that import fossil fuels, every solar panel and wind turbine reduces dependence on foreign energy. Egypt and Saudi Arabia alone will account for 86% of the region's wind capacity growth through 2035, positioning themselves as clean energy leaders.

The region's cumulative solar and wind capacity is projected to surge from 49 gigawatts today to 404 gigawatts by 2035. That eight-fold increase represents one of the fastest clean energy transitions happening anywhere on Earth right now.

Manufacturing is growing locally too, with solar module production in the MENA region exceeding 3 gigawatts by the end of 2024. Facilities in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the UAE, Egypt, and Algeria are creating jobs while building the hardware for a cleaner future.
