Mikaela Shiffrin Wins 108th World Cup Before Olympics

Mikaela Shiffrin just reminded the world why she's the greatest Alpine skier of all time, and her timing couldn't be better.

The American star dominated Sunday's World Cup slalom race in the Czech Republic, finishing 1.67 seconds ahead of her closest competitor. It was her biggest win of the season and her seventh victory in eight slalom races, sending a powerful message just weeks before the 2026 Winter Olympics begin in Italy.

Shiffrin posted the fastest time in both runs, opening up a massive 1.26-second lead after the first. By the time she crossed the finish line, the only real challenge was making sure she didn't miss a gate with such a comfortable cushion.

The race marked a full-circle moment for the champion. She competed in her first-ever World Cup event at the same Czech venue back in 2011 when she was just 15 years old. "I feel like when I was 15 years old still," Shiffrin told reporters after the race.

Now 30, she has shattered every record in the sport. Her 108 career World Cup victories extend her own remarkable achievement, putting her 22 wins ahead of Swedish legend Ingemar Stenmark. Of those 108 wins, an incredible 71 have come in slalom alone, more than most skiers win in their entire careers across all events.

Sunday's victory also clinched Shiffrin's ninth slalom crystal globe, the award given to each season's discipline winner. She's also leading the overall World Cup standings with the Olympics still ahead.

The win came just one day after Shiffrin returned to the giant slalom podium for the first time in two years, marking an emotional comeback in the event where she suffered an injury in November 2024.

Why This Inspires

Four years ago in Beijing, Shiffrin faced one of the toughest moments of her career. She went to the Olympics hoping to medal in all six events but crashed out of three races, including her signature slalom, and missed the podium in the others.

This time feels different. Shiffrin is skiing with a maturity and confidence that comes from experience, both good and bad. She's not trying to conquer every event, instead focusing on her strengths with a clear mind and the support of her team.

"The Olympics is a totally different challenge," Shiffrin acknowledged. "I've had great Olympics, I've had tough Olympics. I try to go in with an open mind, good spirit, trusting my team."

Her dominance this season speaks volumes. Five of her seven slalom wins have come by more than a full second, margins that are nearly unheard of at the elite level. Only Switzerland's Camille Rast has managed to beat her once, snapping a six-race winning streak earlier this season.

As Shiffrin heads to Cortina d'Ampezzo as the clear gold medal favorite in slalom, she's bringing more than just technical skill—she's bringing resilience, perspective, and pure joy for the sport she's dominated for over a decade.
