Million Homes Powered by East Coast Offshore Wind Farms

Giant wind turbines rising three times the height of the Statue of Liberty are now spinning off Rhode Island's coast, sending clean electricity to roughly 1 million homes across the Northeast.

Five offshore wind farms are either fully operational or under construction along the East Coast, marking a major milestone for American clean energy. Two are already powering homes, two are nearly complete, and one is halfway built.

Revolution Wind, located more than 15 miles south of Rhode Island's coast, is over 90% complete and recently began delivering power to New England's grid. The turbines stretch across the horizon in evenly spaced rows, with workers completing installation of the final components at a central gray substation.

Nearby, Sunrise Wind is nearly 50% complete, with a mix of spinning turbines and yellow foundations waiting for their towers and blades. Massive crane vessels are installing the offshore components, which appear to touch the clouds when fully assembled.

South Fork Wind, the first large U.S. offshore wind farm, opened in 2024 and is now in its second year of commercial operation. Its 12 turbines generate enough power for more than 70,000 New York homes.

The Block Island Wind Farm, closest to the coast, made history in 2016 as America's first offshore wind farm. Its five turbines replaced polluting diesel generators that previously powered Block Island.

Vineyard Wind finished construction in March and is expected to reach full operations soon, providing power for over 400,000 Massachusetts homes and businesses. Two additional major projects are under construction in New York and Virginia.

The offshore wind boom comes at a crucial time for coastal states facing skyrocketing electricity demand and limited land for large energy projects. Higher energy costs are hitting families in their wallets, and offshore wind offers a practical solution.

The growing industry has created thousands of jobs while helping states transition to cleaner energy sources. Federal courts have blocked attempts to halt the industry's progress, allowing construction to continue.
