When a garbage bin unexpectedly fell off a Milwaukee sanitation truck in April, nobody knew it would save a life and create a family.
Workers Naz Nalls and Omar were making their usual rounds when the bin slipped before emptying. Inside, buried under trash, they found a severely underweight dog who was moments away from being crushed.
"Usually, it don't fall off. That's what's crazy about this. I feel like it was kind of destiny," Nalls said.
Despite his condition, the dog was friendly and eager for human contact. The crew immediately called their supervisor, Alex Halverson, who happened to be heading their way already.
The connection was instant. Halverson pulled the dog from the bin, and the grateful animal let himself be held. Seeing how hungry he was, Halverson handed over his two peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
"He didn't even chew. He just inhaled," Halverson recalled.

While sanitation crews encounter animals in trash more often than most realize, Halverson knew this dog deserved better. He personally drove him to Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission instead of waiting for pickup.
After receiving medical care and being placed in foster care, the dog had one waiting adoption application. Halverson had already been considering getting a second dog, and fate had just introduced them.
He officially adopted the pup and named him PJ, honoring those peanut butter and jelly sandwiches that marked the beginning of his new life.
Sunny's Take
What makes this story shine isn't just the rescue. It's that someone who was purposefully discarded was met with people who saw his worth immediately. Halverson didn't hesitate to share his lunch or open his home.
The malfunction that stopped the crusher from activating happened at exactly the right moment. The supervisor arrived minutes later instead of hours. Every piece fell into place for a dog who had been thrown away like garbage.
"God knows what he went through. And the fact that he was still super friendly," Halverson said.
PJ now has a forever home with the man who first lifted him to safety, proving that sometimes the smallest twist of fate changes everything.
