Minneapolis Shelter Cares for Pets After Family Detentions

When Chapo's owner was detained by ICE in late January, the one-year-old dog had no idea why his whole world suddenly changed. The Bond Between, a Minneapolis animal shelter, knew exactly what to do.

The organization has been offering respite foster care for years, helping people in crisis temporarily place their pets in safe homes. Now they're seeing an unprecedented surge in requests as immigration enforcement sweeps across Minnesota.

Chapo found a temporary home with his owner's friend before moving to a foster family. But executive director Rachel Mairose told MPR News that many other pets need help too.

The shelter doesn't just take in displaced animals. They're helping families create emergency plans before anything happens, including identifying trusted caregivers and documenting feeding routines and veterinary needs.

When families become too afraid to leave home for supplies, The Bond Between delivers care kits packed with food, treats, and toys right to their doors. Volunteers, including local students, spent an afternoon assembling over 150 dog packets and 60 cat packets for their neighbors.

"These kids spent their afternoon putting together packets," the organization shared on social media. "Just from one afternoon of teens coming together for their community."

The Ripple Effect

The response has stretched far beyond Minneapolis. People from all 50 states and 11 countries have sent donations to support the shelter's work.

"This is a worldwide movement powered by love," The Bond Between wrote. "A movement sustained by everyday people that want the same thing: to help."

The organization's goal remains clear: reunification. They believe no one should have to choose between their own safety and the animal they love.

Mairose emphasized that the pets coming through their doors have been well cared for and deeply loved. "They are family members," she said. "Nobody meant to abandon them."

The shelter continues standing with their community, offering safe landing places and protecting the bonds between people and their pets. Through volunteer hours, emergency planning, and fostering, they're ensuring these animals stay healthy and loved until they can return home.
