Minnesota College Boosts Scholarships 87% in One Year

A Minnesota community college just made higher education dramatically more affordable for hundreds of students, proving that strategic philanthropy can change lives in a single semester.

Minnesota State College Southeast awarded 210 scholarships totaling more than $230,000 for fall 2026. That's 10% more scholarships than last year, but here's the remarkable part: the total dollar amount jumped 87%.

The surge came from smart endowment management and passionate donors who wanted to help students pursue unconventional careers. Michelle Dingwall, the college's Executive Director of Foundation and Development, credits the growth to matching donors with causes they care about deeply.

One anonymous donor in Alaska created something the college had never seen before: a full-ride scholarship for band instrument repair. The $12,500 gift covers tuition, fees, tools, and all the equipment needed to learn the specialized trade.

Breydon Woods received that life-changing scholarship this year. "This scholarship means so much," Woods said. "It will help me go to college without having to work two to three jobs to support myself."

The college also launched 10 new $1,000 scholarships for truck driving students. The Sports Car Club of La Crosse funds them, in an unusual partnership where the club uses the truck driving course when classes aren't in session.
