Minor League Game Brings 'Field of Dreams' to Life in Iowa

Baseball fans got to live out their Field of Dreams fantasies in Dyersville, Iowa, where minor league players brought magic to the legendary movie site.

The Iowa Cubs hosted the St. Paul Saints in the first affiliated Minor League game at the renovated Field of Dreams ballpark since 2022. Iowa won 6-3 in a game that felt more like a celebration than a competition.

Fans walked through a cornfield maze to reach the ballpark, just like the ghostly players in the 1989 film. Before the game, "Ghost Players" in vintage uniforms greeted visitors and even joined both teams for a pregame photo. These local volunteers have been bringing the movie to life at the site since 1990.

The game delivered fireworks both literally and figuratively. Ben Ross, the Twins' No. 17 prospect, launched the first home run 394 feet into the cornfield on just the sixth pitch. The ball disappeared into the stalks as real fireworks lit up the Iowa sky.

Iowa's comeback made the night even sweeter. In the fifth inning alone, the Cubs scored five runs, including back-to-back homers from Ben Cowles and Jordan Nwogu. Nwogu's blast traveled 420 feet at over 106 mph for his first Triple-A home run.

Three local high school freshmen took turns climbing a ladder to manually update the scoreboard after each inning. They'll get to do it again when the Philadelphia Phillies and Minnesota Twins play at the same field later this week.

The Ripple Effect

The game brought together generations of baseball fans in a way few events can. Families played catch with the Ghost Players on the actual movie site before heading to watch prospects who could be tomorrow's stars.

Cubs pitcher Jaxon Wiggins called it "once in a lifetime" and "surreal" after striking out two batters in his one inning. Kevin Alcántara recorded three of the game's hardest hits while making a running catch to rob top prospect Walker Jenkins of a hit.

Special food added to the experience. Fans devoured elotes bites (corn clusters fried in corn dog batter topped with cotija cheese) and walleye fish po'boys created just for the minor league game.

When the final out landed, outfielders gathered in a circle celebrating as "Go, Cubs, Go" played through the speakers. The Iowa sky erupted in fireworks while fans cheered for players they might see in the majors soon.
