Mississippi Rescue Saves Pregnant Dog and 9 Puppies

A pregnant dog had nowhere to go when animal control found her wandering the streets of Brookhaven, Mississippi, alone and scared. The crowded city pound was already at capacity, and time was running out.

When Safe Haven Rescue of Mississippi heard about her situation, they rushed to pull her from the facility. Foster mom Kristi Buffington Wilcox welcomed the expectant mother into her home, offering the dog her first taste of safety.

Despite everything she'd been through, the young pup greeted her rescuers with warmth and trust. She'd never experienced the comfort of air conditioning or reliable meals, yet her sweet nature shone through immediately.

"She was so sweet," Safe Haven Rescue president Christina Segura told The Dodo. "We decided to name her Sweet Caroline, like the song."

Just 14 hours after leaving the pound, Sweet Caroline went into labor. By morning, she had delivered nine healthy puppies: two girls and seven boys.

The new mama adapted to motherhood like a natural. Sweet Caroline now spends her days caring for her babies in a safe, comfortable home.

This rescue turned what could have been a tragedy into a beautiful beginning for 10 dogs. Sweet Caroline's story shows what's possible when communities support local rescue organizations.

Safe Haven Rescue is encouraging more families to get involved through fostering and volunteering. They're also asking community members to report dogs in need and to spay and neuter their pets.

The entire dog family remains with Wilcox, growing stronger each day. Once the puppies are old enough, all 10 dogs will begin their search for forever families.

"Everybody is doing very well," Segura said. "Their future is gonna be bright."
