The framework builds on something called the Lawson Criterion, a 1950s formula that describes the scientific conditions needed for fusion to work. The MIT team adapted this concept to create an "economic Q" that shows the ratio of money gained versus money spent.

Lo, a finance professor at MIT's Sloan School of Management, put it perfectly: "It's challenging to reduce complex scientific and engineering requirements to economic consequences. But if we don't do that, we're not going to get the funding we need to achieve the impact we want."
The framework works for any type of fusion power plant, whether it uses magnets or lasers to create the fusion reaction. It considers power density, efficiency of converting fusion energy into usable electricity, durability of components, construction costs, and expected returns on investment.
Whyte and Lo also co-founded Rutherford Energy Ventures, which is now working with Oak Ridge National Laboratory to build a consortium for new fusion research. Their framework appears in the Journal of Fusion Energy as an open-access publication, meaning anyone can use it.
The timing matters. The world needs clean energy solutions fast, and fusion offers something unique: abundant power with attractive safety features and minimal environmental impact. Now the industry has a roadmap to make it economically real.
