They identified 14 key emotions most relevant to extreme living conditions, drawing from aerospace research and even Brené Brown's "Atlas of the Heart," which explores 87 human emotions.
"We've come a long way from the human in a tin can," says Lin. "As our priorities shift toward long-duration exploration missions, making sure a crew is safe, healthy, happy, and productive becomes even more important."

The platform uses the same risk mapping format NASA employs for physical health dangers. But this time, it connects tangible design features to intangible outcomes like trust, curiosity, and kinship among crew members.
The Ripple Effect
While created for space missions to the Moon and Mars, this tool reaches far beyond astronauts. Submarine crews, Antarctic researchers, oil rig workers, and even people in refugee camps or disaster zones face similar psychological pressures from isolation and confinement.
"These are incredibly stressful environments," Lin notes. "We try to make this work applicable to a lot of scenarios and identify points of intervention in habitat design to reduce stress."
The research, published in the journal npj Microgravity, represents the first comprehensive collection of habitat design insights focused on behavioral health. Previous studies existed in scattered pieces, examining individual connections like room temperature and mood. Now designers have everything in one interactive, visual platform.
As humanity plans longer journeys into deep space, this tool ensures we're building homes, not just shelters. The difference between surviving and thriving might come down to how thoughtfully we design the spaces where people live under extreme pressure.
