MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred announced Thursday that major league players will likely participate in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, reversing years of absence from the Games. The league is planning an extended All-Star break from July 9 to 21, allowing players to represent their countries in the six-nation tournament at Dodger Stadium.

"I sense a lot of momentum towards playing in LA in 2028," Manfred said following an owners meeting. "People have come to appreciate that the Olympics on U.S. soil is a unique marketing opportunity for the game."

The change represents a significant shift from 2021, when MLB didn't allow players on team rosters to compete in Tokyo. Japan won gold that year, defeating the United States 2-0 in a tournament dominated by non-MLB players.

Several hurdles remain before the plan becomes reality. MLB needs an agreement with the players union and must resolve insurance coverage for player contracts during Olympic competition. Still, Manfred expressed confidence these issues will be worked out.

Player interest is running high, according to the commissioner. The tournament scheduled for July 13-19 would give fans worldwide a chance to see baseball's elite compete in a format rarely possible during the regular season.

The United States automatically qualified for both baseball and softball tournaments as the host nation. The top two countries from the Americas in next month's World Baseball Classic will also earn spots in the Olympic field.
