Mom at 18 Helps Daughter Reach Dream College 18 Years Later

When Jeanice Perez saw the positive pregnancy test at 18, she made a promise through tears: her daughter would have a better life.

Jeanice grew up in Las Vegas where poverty was simply the air her family breathed. "I learned really early what it felt like to make 'not having enough' be enough," she told reporters.

Now 18, her daughter Jordyn is packing for New York University, where she'll study biology. The journey from that scared teenager to a mom watching her daughter's dreams come true took nearly two decades of small, steady choices.

Jeanice carried guilt for years about bringing a child into poverty without a plan. She openly shared those feelings in a TikTok video that reached over 250,000 viewers, calling her decision "selfish."

But she transformed that guilt into fuel. Growing up, no one had taught Jeanice that education could be a path out of poverty.

"For a lot of people growing up like me, the American Dream looks like getting a job as soon as you can and helping your family with bills," she explained. Everyone stayed in survival mode, so conversations about college never happened.

Jeanice started saving whatever she could, even when it was just $5 a month. She opened a high-yield savings account and invested small amounts consistently over time.

"The 'right time' is never going to come," she said. "Life is going to keep happening, so you've got to start with whatever you have right now."

When Jordyn's NYU acceptance arrived, she was at a Student Council meeting. She rushed home, opened the decision, and froze in disbelief.

"How did I get in?" Jordyn asked, reading the letter again and again. Minutes later, the teenage normalcy returned as she headed back to school.

For Jeanice, the moment carried 18 years of weight. "I've tried a hundred times to describe what that moment felt like, to watch your baby have her dream come true, and I still don't have the words for it," she said.

Getting Jordyn into NYU isn't what Jeanice considers her biggest win. That honor belongs to their relationship.

Jeanice didn't have a strong bond with her own mother, so she intentionally created something different. "I'm proud that she's confident, kind and emotionally intelligent," she told reporters.

She built a safe space where Jordyn feels comfortable sharing everything. That emotional foundation matters more to Jeanice than any college acceptance letter.
