Monaco Makes Davis Cup History with Win Over Finland

Monaco defeated Finland 3-1 in Espoo on September 18-19 to secure their first-ever spot in the 2027 Davis Cup Qualifiers. The victory marks a stunning achievement for a team ranked 35th facing the 20th-ranked Finns on their home court.

The weekend began with an emotional surprise. Lucas Catarina, who retired from professional tennis over two years ago due to injury, returned to competition for his country. Though he lost his match after not playing professionally since his retirement, just being back meant everything to him.

"I thought I would never feel that again," Catarina said. "Just to be there with my friends and feel the emotions was amazing."

Valentin Vacherot evened the score on Friday, winning his singles match against Finland's Eero Vasa. The world number 21 player took both sets to level the competition heading into Saturday.

Saturday brought the turning point. Monaco's doubles team of Romain Arneodo and Hugo Nys lost their first set but fought back to win the next two, giving Monaco a crucial 2-1 lead. That comeback put them one victory away from history.

Vacherot clinched it in his second singles match. After trading sets with Finland's Otto Virtanen, he won the deciding third set 6-4 to secure Monaco's historic qualification.

Monaco's achievement reflects a decade of dedication and friendship. Catarina joined the Davis Cup team over 10 years ago when Monaco fought just to stay in the lower divisions. Now they'll compete against the world's leading tennis nations.
