Montana Hospital Offers $4K Scholarship to Med Students
Bitterroot Health is investing in the next generation of healthcare workers with a $4,000 scholarship for local students pursuing medical careers. The annual award helps Ravalli County graduates focus on their studies instead of worrying about loans.
For students dreaming of careers in healthcare, a Montana hospital is making those dreams more affordable.
Bitterroot Health in Hamilton has announced its annual Medical Staff Scholarship, offering $4,000 to Ravalli County high school graduates who are studying in the medical field. The award is open to students who have completed at least one year of specialized health or medical education.
The scholarship has already helped local students like John Edwards, a Stevensville graduate now studying pharmacy at the University of Montana. "Getting the Bitterroot Health Med Staff scholarship meant that I could worry a little less about my loans and focus more on learning everything I can to become a great pharmacist," Edwards said.
In 2021, the hospital awarded two scholarships to nursing students Alivia Drake and Katie Banister. Drake earned her Certified Nursing Assistant certification while still in high school and began working at a local care facility. Banister pursued her nursing degree at Montana State University's College of Nursing.

Dr. Weinberger, a physician at Bitterroot Health, explained the hospital's motivation. "We recognize that building a healthier community is more than just healthcare," he said. "It's about finding multiple ways to support the growth and well-being of our community."
The Ripple Effect
This scholarship does more than ease one student's financial burden. By investing in local healthcare students, Bitterroot Health is helping ensure the Bitterroot Valley has skilled medical professionals for years to come. Each recipient who returns to practice in the community multiplies the impact of that original $4,000 investment.
Students interested in applying need to submit transcripts, an essay about their career goals, and proof of at least one year of completed medical education. They must also describe their community involvement and financial need. The application deadline is June 30, 2026.
Interested students can contact Chelsea at the Medical Staff Office for more information at chelseafuge@bitterroothealth.org or (406) 375-4547.
One scholarship at a time, rural communities are growing their own healthcare heroes.
