Ohio Senior Wins $10K Scholarship After Family Health Crisis

When Grace Fondale watched her family face serious health challenges, she didn't just feel helpless. She found her calling.

The John Glenn High School graduate just won a $10,000 scholarship from Medical Mutual's scholarship program, beating out more than 600 other Ohio seniors. In her application essay, Fondale wrote that seeing her loved ones receive life-saving medical care solidified her dream of becoming a doctor.

Now she's headed to The Ohio State University to major in exercise science, the first step on her path to medicine. The scholarship recognizes both academic excellence and community involvement, two areas where Fondale clearly stood out from the massive applicant pool.

Only six students across Ohio received the top $10,000 award this year. That's a selection rate of less than 1%, making Fondale's achievement even more remarkable.

The Ripple Effect

Medical Mutual has been investing in students like Fondale since 2005, but the impact has grown significantly in recent years. Since partnering with the Columbus Foundation in 2017, the program has awarded more than $1.5 million in scholarships to Ohio students pursuing higher education.

The program specifically serves students at Medical Mutual customer high schools across Ohio, creating opportunities in communities the health insurer serves. For students like Fondale, it means the difference between struggling with tuition and focusing fully on their studies.
