Moroccan Immigrant Grows Renewable Energy Firm to 250 Workers

When Mbark Baaziz left his small Moroccan village for Spain in 2005, he carried nothing but values learned from a humble childhood and a father who taught him that hard work opens doors.

Starting from scratch in Tarragona, Spain, Mbark faced language barriers and an unfamiliar job market. He took whatever jobs he could find, treating each one as a classroom rather than just a paycheck.

While working, Mbark pursued his education in renewable energy, eventually earning a master's degree in the field. His interest wasn't random. Growing up in Zagora's desert climate, where sunshine is plentiful but water and traditional energy are scarce, he'd seen firsthand how natural resources could solve real problems.

In 2008, Mbark took his first entrepreneurial step. A decade later, he founded BAMSA Y OBRAS S.L.U with just ten workers.

Today, his company employs over 250 people from Morocco and other countries, managing labor for major industrial and construction projects across Spain. The company has earned recognition from energy giants like Repsol and Moeve for work on groundbreaking projects, including an energy decarbonization initiative in Bilbao and a biofuel facility in Huelva.

The COVID-19 pandemic nearly ended everything. Project halts and supply chain disruptions hit the industrial sector hard, and Mbark seriously considered walking away from the business he'd built.

Instead, he searched for new solutions and kept his team employed. The company survived by honoring commitments to clients and protecting jobs during the uncertainty.

Now Mbark is looking homeward. Morocco aims to increase its renewable energy share to over 52% by 2030 and is launching ambitious green hydrogen initiatives.

He sees enormous potential for Morocco to become a global player in renewable energy. But he stresses that the benefits must go beyond just producing energy to include industrial development, job creation, and skills training for Moroccan workers and companies.

His next goal is transforming his company from one that provides labor into one that transfers knowledge and professional training. The expertise he's gained working with Spain's leading energy firms could help build Morocco's green future.
