Morocco Becomes Africa's Top Car Exporter, Eyes Green Future

Morocco just hit a milestone that seemed impossible three decades ago: the North African nation now exports more cars than any other country on the continent.

King Mohammed VI marked his 27th year as monarch this week with news that should make economists smile. Morocco's automotive and aerospace industries now account for over 40% of total exports, surpassing even the country's famous phosphate reserves.

The numbers tell a story of patient, deliberate growth. Morocco produced nearly one million vehicles in 2024 and recorded 4.9% economic growth. The King expects similar or higher rates in 2026.

The strategy extends to self-sufficiency. Morocco's food and pharmaceutical industries now meet about 80% of domestic needs. The nation is also developing capabilities in defense technology and cybersecurity.

Morocco's industrial rise is creating opportunities across society. The King emphasized that automotive, aerospace, renewable energy, and food processing sectors attract investment while generating jobs and wealth for ordinary Moroccans.

The government pairs industrial growth with social programs. Universal social protection, local development initiatives, and support for Moroccans living abroad remain central to the long-term vision.

Financial institutions are being called to expand lending to small and medium businesses, support innovation, and mobilize national savings for continued investment. The King sees an integrated approach where economic growth lifts living standards across the board.

Good rainfall this year strengthened both water and food security, addressing two critical challenges for the region. Combined with political stability and effective institutions, Morocco is positioning itself as a reliable partner during uncertain times globally.

The King's message was clear: stability drives development, and Morocco intends to protect and build on that foundation while looking toward a greener, more self-sufficient future.
