Morocco Breaks Ground on $24M Hospital for 70,000 People

Residents of Tafraout, Morocco, won't have to travel hours for medical care much longer. Officials just broke ground on a new proximity hospital designed to serve 70,000 people across Tiznit Province with everything from surgery to pediatrics.

The $24.5 million facility will span four hectares and include 45 beds when it opens. Patients will find general medicine, specialized consultations, maternity services, intensive care, and treatment for respiratory and cardiovascular conditions all under one roof.

Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch launched the project Monday alongside health officials and regional authorities from Souss-Massa. The hospital represents one piece of a much larger development push aimed at closing the gap between Morocco's regions.

Beyond healthcare, Tafraout is getting an economic boost designed to support local artisans and traders. A new craft display and sales center will showcase traditional handicrafts, drawing visitors and creating opportunities for makers.

The town is also building a modern market complex spanning 16,000 square meters. The space will house a weekly market, livestock market, and slaughterhouse built to current hygiene standards with regular veterinary oversight.

Officials expect the market facilities to create jobs while reducing losses in the meat sector. Traders and breeders will work in better conditions, and the community will benefit from improved food safety.

The Ripple Effect

The development plan extends far beyond buildings. Tafraout will see rehabilitated neighborhoods gain basic equipment they've lacked, while new green spaces will give children safe places to play.

A student residence means young people can stay closer to home for their education. Plans include a multi-purpose facility, summer camp, municipal building, and sports field with artificial turf.

Each project feeds into Morocco's broader commitment to territorial development. The goal is ensuring public investment reaches communities in every corner of the country, not just major cities.

Medical staff will also benefit from improved working conditions at the new hospital. Better facilities help attract and retain healthcare workers in areas that have historically struggled with staffing.
