MrBeast Builds $10M Village in Ghana to Fight Child Labor

A new village in Ghana is giving families a way out of one of the cocoa industry's darkest problems: children working on farms instead of going to school.

YouTube creator MrBeast (Jimmy Donaldson) spent nearly $10 million building Abna Dakwa Village on previously undeveloped land. After a year of planning and eight months of construction, the community now offers housing, education, healthcare, and clean drinking water to families who previously had few options.

The village includes a school equipped for more than 300 children, complete with free daily meals for the next five years. Ten free homes were built specifically for teachers to staff the school. A medical clinic serves the community's health needs, while a marketplace provides space for local commerce.

To help families achieve long-term stability, the project includes agricultural facilities and fish tanks designed to make the community more self-sufficient. Two large water towers supply clean drinking water, and an off-grid solar power system (supported by the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet) keeps everything running without relying on outside infrastructure.

The Rockefeller Foundation partnered on the education program, recognizing that getting kids into classrooms requires addressing the economic pressures that push families toward child labor.

The Ripple Effect

MrBeast's involvement isn't random. His chocolate company, Feastables, sources cocoa ethically and has highlighted the widespread use of child labor in West African cocoa farms. By building this village, he's creating a working model for how communities can break the cycle.

In his documentary video about the project, MrBeast challenged both consumers and chocolate companies to demand change. "Big chocolate will not care about rampant child labour until you guys watching this video do something about it," he said, pushing viewers to hold manufacturers accountable.

The village proves that real alternatives exist. When families have access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, children can be children instead of workers. Other communities facing similar challenges now have a blueprint to follow.

This project shows what happens when someone with a massive platform decides to use it for lasting change instead of just viral moments.
