Mumbai Restores 1944 Hero Fire Truck to Working Condition

Eight decades after helping rescue trapped workers from a devastating dock explosion, a historic fire truck is ready to roll through Mumbai's streets once more.

The Mumbai Fire Brigade just completed restoration of a 1944 turntable ladder truck that played a hero's role during the Bombay dock explosions. On April 14, 1944, a British ammunition ship caught fire and exploded twice in Victoria Dock, killing 740 people and injuring nearly 2,000 more. The blasts were so powerful that seismographs recorded them.

This iron-bodied rescue vehicle, manufactured by British firm Leyland in 1937, became central to saving lives that day. Its ladder extended high enough to reach warehouse workers trapped by flames, and its sleek design let firefighters navigate the congested dock area quickly. More than 100 people climbed down that ladder to safety during the three-day firefighting operation.

The truck served Mumbai for decades before being retired as a keepsake at fire brigade headquarters in Byculla. Last year, officials decided the old hero deserved better than gathering dust.

The Ripple Effect

Restoring an 88-year-old vehicle meant solving puzzles that would challenge any mechanic. Many original parts simply don't exist anymore, forcing the team to study old records and custom-build replacements that would fit the vintage frame.

Workers replaced worn parts, repainted the truck its original red, greased the hydraulic levers, and refurbished the engine and chassis completely. New tires now make it roadworthy again. Even the warning bell that once cleared paths during emergencies works perfectly.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will inaugurate the restored truck on Republic Day morning. While it won't fight fires anymore, it will parade on special occasions including Firefighting Week, Republic Day, and Independence Day. The rest of the time, it'll be displayed and maintained at headquarters.

The truck represents more than mechanical achievement. India's April 14 Fire Safety Week exists because of the 1944 tragedy this vehicle helped fight. Keeping that history alive reminds current firefighters of the bravery that came before them and the lives their work protects.
