Munich's famous Oktoberfest isn't just serving beer this year—doctors are offering flu shots right alongside the pretzels and steins. As millions pack into crowded beer tents for the world's largest folk festival, health workers are seizing the moment to close Germany's vaccination gap.

The campaign launched Saturday when Oktoberfest officially opened with the traditional tapping of the first keg. While the mayor shouted "O'zapft is!" ("It has been tapped!"), health officials promoted their own slogan: "O'piekst is!" ("It has been pricked!").

Dr. Christoph Spinner, head of infectiology at Munich's Rechts der Isar hospital, explained the simple logic. "With so many people coming together in such tight spaces in the beer tents, the risk of infection at Oktoberfest is higher," he said. The timing couldn't be more perfect—the festival coincides exactly with the start of annual flu season.

The numbers reveal why doctors are getting creative. Less than a third of Germans who should get flu shots have actually received them. Traditional clinics and pharmacies aren't reaching enough people, so health workers decided to try something different.

Beatrix Zurek from München impft! ("Munich vaccinates!"), a city-led health initiative, put it plainly. "It's our job to go where people are. And that means: Oktoberfest." The campaign offers both flu vaccines and COVID-19 boosters to anyone who wants them.
