The mixture gets spread thin and dried using roller systems identical to those in paper mills. That means factories could adapt existing equipment rather than building entirely new production lines, slashing the cost of switching to sustainable materials.

The material performed just as well as traditional leather in lab tests. The team even created a prototype handbag to prove it could handle real-world use. Researchers can now control color and texture by adjusting the pulp mixture before processing.

Here's where this gets really exciting: the material completely disappears when you're done with it. Submerge it in water and it breaks down in 28 days. Toss it in industrial composting and it's gone in six weeks. No microplastics. No toxic chemicals. Just nutrients returning to the soil.
