Namibia Calls for Justice 117 Years After Genocide

More than a century after one of history's darkest colonial chapters, Namibia is amplifying calls for justice that honor the past while healing the future.

National Assembly Speaker Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila issued a powerful statement Thursday marking Genocide Remembrance Day, commemorating the systematic killing of Ovaherero and Nama people by German colonial forces between 1904 and 1908. Her words carried both grief and hope.

The genocide began when communities resisted land theft, forced labor, and colonial oppression. Their courage during those brutal years still shapes their identity today.

Against unimaginable odds, these communities survived generations of killing, displacement, and marginalization. They preserved their languages, traditions, and cultural practices when everything seemed designed to erase them.

"Their resilience was not accidental. It required sustained effort under extremely difficult conditions," Kuugongelwa-Amadhila said.

This remembrance is creating momentum for real change. Germany and Namibia signed a Joint Declaration in 2021, marking the first official step toward recognition and reparations.

But Kuugongelwa-Amadhila emphasized that remembering alone isn't enough. The concerns raised by affected communities during negotiations still need full attention to achieve genuine reconciliation.

She's calling on young Namibians to learn this history and understand how it shaped their nation. Education about the genocide helps new generations appreciate the strength of those who came before them.

The National Assembly has pledged ongoing commitment to justice, dignity, and accountability. Their solidarity extends directly to the descendants of genocide survivors, many of whom still live with intergenerational trauma.
