Namibia Gets 2 Ambulances After Woman's Preventable Death

✨ Faith Restored

A Namibian port authority donated two fully equipped ambulances after a grieving husband shared how his wife died waiting for emergency transport. The gift will save lives in remote communities where distance often determines survival.

When Ngeno Nakamhela lost his wife in 2024 because no ambulance could reach them in time, he turned his grief into action. His story moved Namibia's port authority to donate two fully equipped ambulances that will now serve communities where emergency transport can mean the difference between life and death.

The Namport Social Investment Fund presented the ambulances to Namibia's Ministry of Health and Social Services on Monday. One will serve Kalkfeld, the remote community where Nakamhela's wife died, while the second will go to another area in urgent need.

Health Minister Esperance Luvindao explained why these vehicles matter so much in Namibia. When a mother faces complications during childbirth in a remote settlement, or a father has a stroke 60 kilometers from the nearest hospital, the distance isn't just geography.

"It is the measurement of their survival," Luvindao said.

Namibia's vast landscape makes healthcare delivery uniquely challenging across its 14 regions. Communities are scattered across enormous distances, and without reliable emergency transport, treatable conditions become fatal.

Nakamhela's story hit close to home for the port authority's leadership. "That story stayed with us," said Amos Shiyuka, chairperson of the Namport Social Investment Fund. "It is the kind of story that no community should have to carry, and no family should have to tell."

The ministry will operate both ambulances through its emergency medical services, while the Mee Ndiku & Rev Ngeno Nakamhela Trust will handle maintenance for the Kalkfeld vehicle.

The Ripple Effect

This donation arrives as part of a broader push to strengthen Namibia's emergency response system. The health ministry distributed 36 new ambulances during the 2025/26 financial year and plans to add 30 more next year.

The government is also working to launch a national air ambulance service. In a country where ground transport sometimes isn't fast enough, helicopters and planes could bridge gaps that road vehicles simply can't cover.

Since 2006, the Namport Social Investment Fund has allocated over N$100 million to projects across all 14 Namibian regions, with more than N$58.2 million already delivered to communities.

Now leaders are calling on other companies to follow suit. Luvindao urged mining companies, banks, insurers, fishing operators, oil and gas companies, and retailers to partner with the government on healthcare.

One family's tragedy has sparked a wave of support that will protect countless others from facing the same heartbreak.
