NASCAR Weekend Honors 54-Year Rescue Vet and 7-Year-Old Hero
A veteran rescuer who saved 150+ lives over 54 years, a teacher who turned grief into hope for 110,000 struggling teens, and a 7-year-old who cooks for his elderly neighbor are being celebrated at Pocono Raceway this June. Their VIP NASCAR weekend proves everyday heroes deserve the spotlight.
Bruce Barton has spent more than half a century pulling people from disaster zones, raging floods, and freezing mountains, but this June he's trading his rescue gear for VIP access to NASCAR's Great American Getaway 400.
Pocono Raceway and Members 1st Federal Credit Union just named three Community Heroes who'll receive all-access race weekend experiences after fans nominated neighbors doing extraordinary things. The winners represent three generations of selflessness: a disaster responder, a grief-turned-mission educator, and a second-grader with a big heart.
Barton earned the "Overall Community Hero" title for 54 years of search-and-rescue work that includes deploying to the 1988 Armenia earthquake, coordinating recovery efforts at Ground Zero after 9/11, and leading two months of operations after Hurricane Katrina. His canine partners have located more than 150 people over the years, and he's personally rescued drowning victims, plane crash survivors, and lost hikers in deadly conditions.
Kat Locke Jones received the "Above & Beyond Hero" award for transforming her brother's death into a lifeline for struggling youth. After losing Sean to depression in 2018, she and her family converted his Delaware home into a mental health support center and launched SL24: UnLocke the Light Foundation.
Since 2019, the foundation has reached more than 110,000 kids and helped save 214 lives. This year alone, they raised $750,000 through the SL24 Basketball Classic, expanding their reach across Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and beyond.

Seven-year-old Ronnie Munro claimed the "Up & Coming Hero" spot for his friendship with Sharon, an elderly stroke survivor in his apartment complex. The homeschooled youngster visits regularly to play cards, help around the house, and cook fresh meals at least once a week, offering companionship that goes beyond what caregivers can provide.
Fans submitted nominations at PoconoRaceway.com over a month-long period, describing in 500 words or less why their nominee deserved recognition. Barton will receive garage passes, pit access, tickets for all three race days, and a $500 Visa card, while Locke Jones and Munro get the same package minus garage access.
Sunny's Take
What makes this story shine isn't just the heroism on display, but that a community took time to notice. Bruce didn't rescue people for recognition. Kat didn't build a mental health empire for awards. Ronnie doesn't cook for Sharon because anyone's watching.
They do it because compassion is its own reward. But when 54 years of service, 110,000 transformed lives, and a child's kindness finally get their moment in the sun, it reminds us that good work doesn't go unseen forever.
The three will enjoy NASCAR weekend festivities from June 12-14, starting with the ARCA Menards Series 150 on Friday and culminating with The Great American Getaway 400 on Sunday.
Sometimes the checkered flag waves for people who've been running toward others their whole lives.
