Nashville International Airport could soon bear the name of one of Tennessee's most cherished daughters, country music legend Dolly Parton.

The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority voted unanimously Friday to begin renaming the airport in Parton's honor, who passed away last month at age 80. The 6-0 decision marks the first official step in a process that gained overwhelming public support.

Officials haven't settled on the final name yet. They're working closely with appropriate parties to determine exactly how Parton's name and legacy will be incorporated into the airport's new identity.

The push to honor Parton gained serious momentum long before the vote. A petition calling for "Dolly Parton International Airport" collected more than 155,000 verified signatures, showing just how much Tennessee residents wanted to celebrate their hometown hero.

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee first announced plans to pursue the renaming back in August. He spoke with Parton's team about the proposal, and her representatives were both appreciative and open to further discussions.
