Nashville Airport to Be Renamed After Dolly Parton

In a moment of unity that feels rare these days, Nashville's warring political factions have agreed on something beautiful: honoring Dolly Parton by renaming their airport after her.

The Republican state government and Democratic city officials, locked in an ugly two-year battle over who actually controls Nashville International Airport, both voted unanimously to rename it after Tennessee's most beloved daughter. The decision makes Parton the first woman whose name will grace one of America's 50 busiest airports.

The push began with superfan Lydia Popovich, who started a petition in 2025 that gained modest traction. But when Parton passed away two weeks ago, the movement exploded to more than 175,000 signatures.

True to her humble nature, Parton had gently declined this honor while she was alive, just as she'd done with other tributes. In 2021, when Tennessee lawmakers wanted to erect a statue of her at the Capitol, she asked them to wait. "Perhaps after I'm gone if you still feel I deserve it," she told them graciously.

Now, both competing airport authorities are racing to make it happen. At Friday's meeting of the state-controlled board, members praised Parton "to the heavens" before voting unanimously to begin the renaming process.

The city-controlled board, which exists separately due to the ongoing political dispute, plans to vote the same way. "The FAA's going to get two votes from two boards, both in favor," said a spokesman for Nashville's Democratic mayor.

Why This Inspires

The irony isn't lost on anyone. Two groups that can't agree on who runs the airport have found perfect harmony in celebrating a woman who spent her life bringing people together.

Born in poverty in the Great Smoky Mountains, Parton became an icon who crossed every boundary: generational, geographic, and political. Her music gave us "Jolene" and "I Will Always Love You." Her movies like "9 to 5" made us laugh and think. Her literacy programs gave millions of children books.

One state board member suggested that "in the spirit of Parton, we can get beyond the litigation and get back to working together." It's exactly what she would have wanted.

Popovich was in tears after the vote. "She's the best of Tennessee. She's the best of the humans on the planet," she told reporters. "Now we get to celebrate her and tell the world how much Tennessee loved her."

The renaming process will take at least a year as officials work with Parton's estate on details like merchandise sales. But the hard part, the agreement, is already done.

Even in death, Dolly Parton is still bringing people together.
