Native American Schools Hit Record 87% Graduation Rate

Native American high schools just achieved something remarkable: their highest graduation rates in history.

Schools managed or funded by the Bureau of Indian Education reached an average 87% graduation rate this year, matching the national benchmark. Eight schools saw every single senior graduate, while 13 more topped 90%.

The numbers tell a powerful story of progress. Back in 2015, only 51% of Native American students graduated high school. That means the graduation rate has jumped 36 percentage points in just ten years.

"These schools are a testament to what is possible when students, families, educators, and tribal communities work together," said BIE Director Tony Dearman. "Our students are showing the nation what Native excellence looks like."

The turnaround came from multiple directions. Schools modernized their data systems, giving teachers real-time dashboards to spot struggling students early. They fixed how they counted transfers, which previously made it look like students dropped out when they simply changed schools.

Remote learning stuck around after the pandemic ended, helping students who need to care for family members or work. More trade programs kept hands-on learners engaged and excited about their futures.

The Ripple Effect

This achievement reaches far beyond diplomas. Native American communities have historically faced deep disadvantages in education, healthcare, and economic opportunity. Higher graduation rates mean more young people positioned to become doctors, teachers, engineers, and tribal leaders.

The success shows what happens when schools adapt to meet students where they are instead of forcing everyone into the same box. Technology helped, but so did honoring the reality of students' lives and their responsibilities to family and community.

Every tribal nation brought different approaches and innovations to the challenge. That diversity of solutions, rooted in local knowledge and cultural values, proved more powerful than any one-size-fits-all program.

These graduates are stepping into a future they've earned, carrying the hopes of their communities and proving what's possible when education systems truly commit to serving every student.
