Navy Golf Wins Championship After 8-Stroke Comeback

Down eight strokes heading into the final round, the Navy men's golf team refused to give up and delivered one of the most thrilling comebacks in Patriot League history.

Playing on Army's home course at West Point, the Midshipmen shot a remarkable 3-under par 277 on Sunday to claim their eighth conference championship and their first since 2018. What makes the victory even sweeter is that Navy became the first team to win the league title on the Black Knights' home turf.

Senior Chip Deegan led the charge with a blazing final round of 67, making six birdies including clutch ones on holes 16 and 18. His performance forced a playoff with Lafayette's Travis Robertson, which Deegan won by making birdie on the third playoff hole to become Navy's first individual medalist since 2018.

"Yesterday we put ourselves behind the eight ball by making some silly mistakes, but I still felt we had a chance," said Navy head coach Jimmy Stobs. His confidence paid off as four of Navy's six players posted their lowest rounds of the tournament when it mattered most.

Freshman Hudson Mitchell matched Deegan's stellar 67 to tie for third place overall, earning a spot on the All-Tournament Team in his first Patriot League Championship appearance. The team effort propelled Navy to a winning score of 864, finishing five strokes ahead of Lafayette.

The Ripple Effect: This victory sends Navy to the NCAA Regionals for the ninth time in program history, giving these student-athletes a chance to compete on the national stage. The comeback also reinforces a powerful message about resilience and perseverance that resonates far beyond the golf course, inspiring the entire Naval Academy community and proving that no deficit is too large when a team believes in itself.

Deegan, who had knocked on the door with four top-five finishes during the regular season, finally broke through at the perfect moment. "The team matters way more than I do, but it was incredible," he said after clinching the win.

The championship means Navy will compete in one of six NCAA Regional tournaments in May, continuing a journey that started with an eight-stroke deficit and ended with a trophy heading back to Annapolis.
