NBA Legend Muggsy Bogues Gets Jersey Retired in 2027

The shortest player in NBA history is getting one of basketball's biggest honors.

The Charlotte Hornets announced they'll retire Muggsy Bogues' No. 1 jersey on February 11, 2027. Standing just 5 feet 3 inches tall, Bogues spent 10 seasons proving that size doesn't determine success.

Bogues joined the Hornets in 1988 as an original team member during the NBA Expansion Draft. Over the next decade, he became the heart of the franchise and a fan favorite across the entire league.

His statistics tell the story of his impact. Bogues remains Charlotte's all-time leader in assists with 5,557, steals with 1,067, and minutes played at 19,768. He averaged 8.8 assists per game throughout his Hornets career.

"Charlotte has been home to me and my family for so many years," Bogues said. He'll join Bobby Phills and Dell Curry as only the third Hornets player to receive this honor.

Why This Inspires

Bogues didn't just succeed despite his height. He excelled because of his heart, speed, and basketball intelligence.

While taller players dominated the paint, Bogues mastered the art of the assist and became impossible to guard on fast breaks. His competitive spirit made him a cornerstone player on a franchise that was finding its identity.

For over 20 years after retiring, Bogues has served as a Hornets ambassador and remained deeply connected to Charlotte. His commitment to the community extended far beyond his playing days.

Hornets co-chairmen Rick Schnall and Gabe Plotkin captured what Bogues represents. "He became a role model for generations, showing young people that their size doesn't have to limit what they can achieve," they said.

The ceremony will give fans who watched him play a chance to celebrate a legend. For younger generations, it's an introduction to a player who proved that determination and skill matter more than any measurement.

Bogues' legacy lives in every undersized athlete who refuses to be counted out.
