Wizards Rookie AJ Dybantsa Scores 19 in Electric NBA Debut
The No. 1 draft pick announced his arrival with an alley-oop dunk seconds into his first NBA game, leading Washington with 19 points despite missing the season's first four games. His aggressive, efficient performance gave fans plenty to celebrate even in a loss.
AJ Dybantsa wasted no time showing why he was worth the wait.
The Washington Wizards rookie missed the first four games of his NBA career with a sprained ankle. When he finally took the court Wednesday night against Cleveland, he made every second count.
Dybantsa attacked the basket on his very first touch off the opening tip. He drew a foul and calmly sank both free throws for his first professional points.
His second trip down the court delivered the highlight everyone will remember. The athletic 6-9 forward slipped behind Cleveland's defense in transition, and point guard Trae Young spotted him from the backcourt with a perfect pass that Dybantsa thundered home for an alley-oop dunk.
By the end of the first quarter, Dybantsa had already scored 9 points on perfect 3-of-3 shooting. His arsenal included a three-pointer and a tough floater through traffic, helping Washington jump out to a 42-34 lead.
The former college basketball scoring champion and first-team All-American kept rolling throughout the game. He opened the second half with another alley-oop dunk that forced Cleveland to call timeout.
Dybantsa finished with a team-high 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting in just his first game facing regular-season NBA competition. Playing alongside multiple All-Stars like Young and Anthony Davis, the rookie found his spots without forcing shots, showing basketball IQ beyond his years.
Why This Inspires
Washington ultimately lost 121-111, but the debut offered something more valuable than a single win. Dybantsa showed he belongs on the biggest stage, playing with confidence and composure that typically takes rookies months to develop.
The Wizards haven't made the playoffs since 2021, but they're building something special. Watching a generational talent grow alongside established stars creates the kind of storyline that makes sports magical.
Dybantsa's journey is just beginning, and if his first game is any indication, fans are in for an incredible ride.
