The planet is what scientists call a "super-Earth," weighing in at 2.3 times our planet's mass. It orbits a red dwarf star every 21 days, staying snug in the "Goldilocks zone" where temperatures allow liquid water to exist.
When researchers first spotted GJ 3378b in 2021, they thought it was much bigger at 5.3 times Earth's mass. Using the Habitable-Zone Planet Finder at McDonald Observatory in Texas, they took another look and found better news hiding in the data.

The difference matters because planets around 4 to 5 Earth masses tend to have thick, heavy atmospheres that create crushing pressure and scorching temperatures. At its actual smaller size, GJ 3378b is much more likely to have an Earth-like atmosphere that could support living organisms.
Paul Robertson, a physics professor at UC Irvine who led the study, calls the planet "kind of next door, cosmically." It's closer than most science fiction worlds authors dream up and joins a growing list of potentially habitable planets including Kepler-22b and Proxima Centauri b.
Living on GJ 3378b wouldn't feel exactly like Earth. The planet orbits so close to its dim red star that radiation levels might be intense. But life on Earth has shown remarkable resilience in extreme conditions, from tardigrades surviving in space to wolves thriving near Chernobyl's radiation.
