Nebraska Town Plants 5,000 Flags to Honor Veterans
Dozens of volunteers placed 5,000 flags at veterans' gravesites across two Nebraska cemeteries ahead of Memorial Day. The community also installed 40 new trash receptacles and restored the veterans memorial through donations and grants.
When dozens of volunteers gathered Thursday morning in Beatrice, Nebraska, they brought 5,000 American flags to honor those who served.
The Beatrice Cemetery Association organized the effort across Evergreen Home Cemetery and Beatrice Cemetery. Volunteers used maps to locate each veteran's gravesite and placed a flag beside their stone.
Sexton Chad Kleveland expressed his gratitude for the turnout. "It looks nice, and it's important to remember those that served," he said.
The Memorial Day preparations extended beyond flag placement. The Friends of the Beatrice Cemetery Association partnered with Kinney Manufacturing to replace old blue barrels with 40 custom-designed metal trash receptacles throughout both cemeteries.
Community donations and grants funded the entire project. Kleveland noted the positive response from visitors who appreciate the upgraded appearance.

The Ripple Effect
The volunteer spirit spread to other memorial projects across the area. Davin Stege, commander of VFW Post 1077, rallied 15 volunteers to restore the veterans memorial at Evergreen Home Cemetery.
The team replaced stones, grout and plants around the memorial's base. The black granite with white stones now creates a striking tribute to local veterans.
Kleveland views the cemetery as more than a final resting place. "I look at this as not just a place where people can come to see where their loved ones are laid to rest, but as a park, too," he said. Many residents walk through to enjoy the trees and peaceful surroundings.
Gage County Veterans Service Officer Keil Mick added another layer of remembrance by placing 75 flags at Veterans Memorial Park last week for Armed Forces Day. Those flags will remain through the holiday weekend.
Additional volunteers prepared courthouse grounds Thursday afternoon with more flag displays. The Memorial Day service at Evergreen Cemetery begins Monday at 10:30 a.m., with Army veteran Cally Ideus delivering the keynote address.
These coordinated efforts ensure every veteran receives recognition this Memorial Day weekend.
