Nebraska Unemployment Drops to 2.8%, 7,000 Jobs Gained

More Nebraskans are working today than at any point this year, with the state's unemployment rate dropping to just 2.8% in August.

That's 7,000 people who've found jobs since February, when unemployment peaked at 3.5%. The state's rate now sits well below the national average of 4.1%, showing economic strength across Nebraska communities.

Lincoln and Omaha are both trending in the right direction. Lincoln's unemployment dropped to 2.6%, with about 850 fewer people out of work compared to the February high. Omaha sits at 3.1%, down from its peak of 3.8% earlier this year.

Smaller counties are seeing even more dramatic improvements. Hall County has cut its unemployment rate nearly in half since January, dropping from 5.4% to 2.7%. That means more than 1,000 residents found work over eight months.

Adams County and Buffalo County both hit 2.5% unemployment in August, their lowest rates of the year. Lincoln County matched that figure, continuing a steady decline since June.

Even Dawson County, hit hard by the January closure of Lexington's Tyson processing plant, is showing signs of recovery. While the plant closure initially pushed unemployment to one in five residents, the rate has now improved to 16.4% from July's 18.8%.

Across Nebraska, about 31,000 people remain unemployed, but that number keeps shrinking. August alone saw roughly 2,000 more Nebraskans return to work compared to July.
